How the TM system works in Gen 9
Unlike older games where TMs were single-use, Scarlet/Violet's TMs are craftable and infinite-use per recipe. Find a TM in the wild (sparkly object on a route) or buy it from a TM Machine to learn the recipe. After that, you can craft as many copies as you have League Points (LP) and materials for.
Materials come from defeated wild Pokémon — for example, Magnemite Coil from Magnemite, or Garchomp Spike from Garchomp. The Pokédex page for each species lists its drops. LP is earned by completing the main story, side quests, and Tera raids.
Notable Gen 9 TMs
- TM113 Tera Blast — every Pokémon learns it. Becomes your Tera type when Terastallized. Replaces Hidden Power's role.
- TM116 Stealth Rock — Gen 9 made this a TM, dramatically expanding the list of hazard setters.
- TM149 Earthquake — universal physical Ground STAB. Most Pokémon that can use it want it.
- TM135 Ice Beam / TM126 Thunderbolt / TM114 Shadow Ball — the holy trinity of special coverage moves, on TMs since Gen 1.
- TM087 Taunt — shuts down opposing setup and recovery for 3 turns. Crucial on fast leads.
