Step 1: Get the Shiny Charm
Complete the Paldea Pokédex (catch one of every species in the base game, including starters and area-locked Pokémon). The professor will give you the Shiny Charm. Charm adds 2 extra shiny rolls per encounter. For 100% Pokédex completion you can use the GO trade method to fill the gaps you can't catch yourself.
Step 2: Make the Sparkling Sandwich
You need Sparkling Power Lv 3 for [Type]. The recipe requires 2 Herba Mystica (Sweet, Salty, Sour, Bitter, or Spicy — variants change which type the boost applies to). Herba Mystica drop from 5- and 6-star Tera raids. Combine 2 Herba Mystica with the matching base ingredients in the Picnic menu.
Example: Salty Herba Mystica × 2 + Onion + Salt + Cheese = Sparkling Power Lv 3: Normal-type. Spawn for 30 minutes after eating the sandwich.
Step 3: Find a Mass Outbreak
Mass outbreaks appear as red dots on your map after defeating wild Pokémon to populate the world. Outbreaks contain 60+ wild Pokémon of one species. Match the outbreak's type to your sandwich's Sparkling Power type for the buff to apply.
Step 4: Power up the outbreak
KO 30 Pokémon from the outbreak. The outbreak indicator now shows a "+30" buff icon. KO 30 more (total 60). Now it shows "+60". Each kills adds an extra shiny roll. After 60 KOs, your total rolls per encounter = base 1 + Charm 2 + Outbreak 60 (= 2) + Sandwich (3) = 8 rolls per encounter ≈ 1 in 512 odds (with 1/4096 base per roll).
Step 5: Encounter Pokémon to find a shiny
With Sparkling Power active + Shiny Charm + 60+ outbreak kills, encounter wild Pokémon by walking up to them. Each encounter has the boosted odds. Shiny Pokémon have a different color palette and sparkle on appearance.
Soft-reset trick: in Gen 9, shiny is rolled at encounter time, not capture. If you see a non-shiny, no need to soft-reset — just walk away (don't initiate battle). The next encounter has a fresh shiny roll.
Expected hunt times
With full setup (Charm + Sandwich + Outbreak 60), expect to find a shiny in:
- 50% chance by 354 encounters (~30 minutes of active hunting)
- 90% chance by 1,177 encounters (~100 minutes)
- 99% chance by 2,354 encounters (~3.5 hours)

Other Gen 9 shiny methods
Masuda Method (breeding)
Breed two Pokémon from different language games (visible as 🇯🇵🇰🇷🇫🇷 in summary). +5 shiny rolls per egg. With Charm = 1 in 512 odds per egg. Trade for a foreign Ditto and put it in your picnic with a target species.
Tera Raids
5-6 star Tera raids have a static IV floor but normal shiny odds (~1 in 4096 with Charm). For "Mighty" event Pokémon (like the 7-star raids), shiny is locked to non-shiny — you can't get a shiny event raid Pokémon.
Static encounters
Box-cover legendaries (Koraidon/Miraidon) and post-game legendaries (Loyal Three, Pecharunt, Terapagos) have static shiny rates with Charm (~1 in 1365). Soft-reset before the encounter and trigger it fresh each time.
