Scizor
Kleavor (Hisuian)
How to evolve Scyther
Scyther has two evolutions, depending on the item and method:
Scyther → Scizor (Bug/Steel) - Trade with another player while Scyther holds a Metal Coat - Metal Coat is consumed on evolution - In Scarlet/Violet, use a Linking Cord in place of trading (no actual trade needed) - Find Metal Coat in Glaseado Mountain (SV) or the Cape Plaza NPC
Scyther → Kleavor (Bug/Rock) - Use a Black Augurite on Scyther - Black Augurite is found in Pokémon Legends: Arceus (drops from defeated Graveler) or transferable from PLA - This evolution is currently only triggerable in PLA — Scarlet/Violet doesn't allow Kleavor evolution natively
Linking Cord shortcut (SV): Instead of actually trading Scyther, give it a Metal Coat, then use a Linking Cord on it. Same result, no trade needed. Linking Cord costs 5 BP at Delibird Presents.
Where to find Scyther
**Scyther** is found in **East Province (Area Three)** and **Glaseado Mountain (lower elevations)** in Scarlet/Violet. Common in tall grass areas. **Hisuian Kleavor** is only catchable via PLA or via Scyther evolution with Black Augurite (also PLA-locked).
Is Scizor worth using?
Scizor is a Smogon OU/UU staple — Bug/Steel typing has only one weakness (Fire 4×). Standard set: Bullet Punch (Technician priority) / Swords Dance / Knock Off / Roost with Life Orb. Kleavor is RU-tier; Bug/Rock typing is rough defensively but Stone Axe + Rapid Spin are unique tools.
Trivia
Scyther was originally a Bug/Flying-type in Gen 1, while Scizor became Bug/Steel in Gen 2 to introduce the Steel type. The Linking Cord (added in Gen 8) was the developers' acknowledgment that solo players shouldn't be locked out of trade evolutions. Kleavor's design references medieval headsmen and is one of the few Pokémon based on a single weapon (an axe).
