How to evolve Gimmighoul
Gimmighoul evolves into Gholdengo when leveled up while you have 999+ Gimmighoul Coins in your bag. The coins drop from defeating wild Gimmighoul, both the standard chest form (found in chests around the map) and the rare roaming form (a giant Gimmighoul that runs from you and is found on tall buildings, lighthouses, and watchtowers).
To speed up the coin grind:
1. Roaming Gimmighoul drop 50-60 coins per defeat (vs 1-3 from chest form). Find them on Asado Desert watchtower, Glaseado Mountain peak, the Poco Path lighthouse, and Cascarrafa rooftops. 2. Use a Pokémon with False Swipe to catch chest-form Gimmighoul (they're worth 1-3 coins on defeat, more on capture via item drop). 3. Sandwich + Encounter Power for Ghost-type spawns increases Gimmighoul spawn rate in some areas.
Once you have 999+ coins, level up your Gimmighoul (any way — XP candy, EXP Share, gym battles). The evolution triggers automatically. The coins are NOT consumed — keep them for trading or evolving a second Gimmighoul.
Where to find Gimmighoul
Chest-form Gimmighoul are found inside small chests scattered across all areas of Paldea (~50+ locations). Approach the chest carefully — if it flees (it shakes first), it disappears for 24 real-time hours. Save before each encounter if you want a specific nature/IV combo.
Is Gholdengo worth using?
Gholdengo is one of the strongest defensive Pokémon in current OU. The Good as Gold ability makes it immune to ALL status moves (Toxic, Will-O-Wisp, Defog, Thunder Wave) — single best ability in Gen 9. Standard set: Make It Rain / Shadow Ball / Nasty Plot / Recover with Air Balloon. See our Gholdengo build guide for the full competitive analysis.
Trivia
Gholdengo's design is based on a slot-machine jackpot character. The 999-coin requirement is a callback to the 'gold ghost' folklore — you need to amass enough wealth to manifest the spirit. Gimmighoul originally only existed in the Pokémon GO crossover event before being added to Scarlet/Violet.
