What defines the Flying type
Flying is almost always a secondary type. Pure Flying Pokémon are extremely rare (Tornadus is the only example), and Flying STAB moves are mostly used by Flying-secondary Pokémon (Charizard's Acrobatics, Corviknight's Brave Bird, Talonflame's Gale Wings Brave Bird). The biggest defensive feature is Ground immunity — Pokémon with Flying typing or the Levitate ability avoid Earthquake entirely, which is why Flying is the most common defensive Tera type in Gen 9.

Flying type history & meta shifts
Flying gained more competitive presence over time, especially with Gen 6's Gale Wings Talonflame (the priority Brave Bird era) and Gen 8/9's Defog dependency on Corviknight. Tera Flying introduced in Gen 9 became the meta-defining defensive Tera for Garchomp, Iron Valiant, and Roaring Moon.
