What defines the Poison type
Poison was a defensive joke until Gen 6 when Fairy was added and Poison became its only super-effective counter besides Steel. Now Poison-types like Toxapex (Poison/Water), Iron Moth (Fire/Poison), and Glimmora (Rock/Poison) are common picks. Poison Pokémon also bring Toxic — the slow-killing status that scales damage by 1/16 per turn (1, 2, 3, 4… up to 15). Gen 9's Toxic Chain ability (Loyal Three) automatically badly poisons targets on contact, a free Toxic that bypasses normal Toxic checks.

Poison offensive analysis
Hits Grass and Fairy super-effective. Fairy super-effective is the killer use case — without Poison, Steel is the only Fairy counter, and Steel attacks are often unavailable on offensive teams. Poison Jab is a 80 BP physical STAB with 30% poison chance; Sludge Bomb is the special equivalent (90 BP, 30% poison).

Poison type history & meta shifts
Poison's biggest moment was Gen 6 when Fairy added a use case. Pre-Fairy, Poison was a near-dead offensive type. Gen 9's Toxic Spikes and Toxic Debris (Glimmora's ability) reintroduced status hazards as a competitive layer.
